Edwin L. Baird

April 13, 1940 — May 16, 2020

Edwin L. Baird, 80, of South Charleston, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 16, 2020. He was born in Moorefield Township in Clark County on April 13, 1940, and was the third of six children to the late Howard and Jennie (Smith) Baird. Ed was a graduate of Northeastern High School and proudly served in the US Marine Corps. After his service, he became a skilled machinist and launched a career that would carry him nearly 50 years to his retirement at age 75. He then continued his skills at home, setting up a wood shop, and found peace and happiness by creatively turning wood into art on his lathe. He was very generous with his skills and was always willing to educate the next generation. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Loretta J. “Redie” (Dunn) Baird, and his two sons, Timothy Baird of Pickaway, Ohio, and Matthew (Kristen) Baird of Centerville, Ohio. He is also survived by three grandchildren (Jacob, Allison, and Zachary), a brother, and two sisters. A service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date and internment will be at Vernon Asbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers (he always said his wife grew prettier ones anyway), memorial contributions may be made to Ohio’s Community Mercy Hospice at (www.communitymercyhospice.org) or to the South Charleston Heritage Commission.
