Daniel Steen of South Charleston, Ohio passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the age of 73.
His final days were spent surrounded by the family he devoted his life to loving and protecting
before reuniting once again with his late parents, Faye and Lamar Steen.
Dan spent years running combines through the fields before later turning his skills towards
building firetrucks, eventually retiring in 2017. He believed in hard work, in using your hands and
in the kind of job where you could stand back at the end of the day and see the difference you
made. Whether helping bring in a harvest or helping build the trucks that would one day answer
someone’s worst day, he took quiet pride in work that mattered to everyday people.
But to his family, he was much more than the work he did.
He was front porch conversations, trusted advice, quiet humor and a steady presence through
every stage of life. He was evenings spent tinkering in the garage getting the racecar ready for
the track, the kind of man who always seemed to know somebody everywhere he went and the
person you could count on without ever having to ask twice. He loved simple things: time with
family, familiar routines and long-running family debates over whipped icing versus buttercream
and whether burgers should be eaten well done. Opinions he defended firmly and
unapologetically.
Retirement suited Dan well. He enjoyed spending time at home and shamelessly spoiling his
beloved dogs, Sadie and Piper, who the family still strongly suspects outranked the rest of them.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jane Steen; his sister, Debra (Dan) Roach; his sons, Matt
and Jedd Steen; his grandchildren, Morgan (Jesse) Payne, Logan Steen, Abbigail and Aiden
Gabbard and Adaira Steen; and his great-grandchildren, Christian and Jensen Payne; along
with extended family and friends who will miss his reliability and the comfort of simply knowing
he was there.
Some people leave behind loud legacies. Others leave something quieter, but no less important.
A lifetime of consistency, loyalty and love woven so deeply into everyday life that their absence
changes it forever. That was Daniel Steen.
Private viewing to be held with family. Celebration of Life TBD.
