Douglas Allen Cloyd, 77, was born on July 1, 1947 in Dayton, Ohio. A 1965 graduate of Cedar Cliff High School in Cedarville, Doug passed away in New York City on December 21, 2024 after a long illness. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Loyce Cloyd, and his siblings James, Dennis, and Donald.
Doug grew up in Cedarville in a busy household. He loved listening to his father play the piano. Herbert was an aeronautics engineer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He died suddenly when Doug was fourteen years old. To help provide for his mother Loyce and younger siblings—Danny, Valerie, and Dennis—Doug worked at a gas station in town. His older sister Diana worked at a grocery store. In the next few years Doug held summer jobs at Wright-Patterson and the Antioch Inn in Yellow Springs. Doug often walked home on quiet back roads. He loved to take a walk and explore. He loved to travel.
With support from his mother’s niece Mary Frances, Doug moved to New York City to study ballet. Doug lived in Manhattan at first, then settled down on Roosevelt Island where he knew everyone and everyone knew him. It was there that Doug met his dearest friend and business partner Frank Mangini. From their years working in advertising where Doug was at J. Walter Thompson and later in corporate travel, Doug and Frank were always there for each other.
Doug attended Christ Church, United Methodist in New York and sang in the choir. Doug’s friendship with the church’s organist Dr. Donald McDonald took him abroad to France for the first time. From Paris, Doug explored London where he loved going to the theater, Italy, Switzerland where he hiked the Alps, Australia, Japan, and everywhere else he could go.
Doug will be remembered for his fierce love of his family, wicked sense of humor, and strength. He is survived by his dear friend Frank who was always by his side and his loving siblings David, Dale (who cared for him during his final years), Diana, Daniel, and Valerie, and their families.
Doug’s ashes along with the remains of his beloved cat Morgan are buried with his mother Loyce Emma Cloyd at the North Cemetery in Cedarville.
