James D. Perks, a dedicated educator, community servant, and cherished family man, passed away on May 3, 2026, just weeks shy of his 79th birthday. Born on May 26, 1947, Jim's life was marked by a steadfast commitment to faith, family, and service.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Sharon Perks; sons: Michael (Tracy) Perks of Springfield and Brian (Dakota) Perks of South Vienna; six grandchildren: Ashley, Austin, Rebekah (Josh) Yoakum, Garrett, Lacey and Wesley Perks; three great-granddaughters: Vada, Harper and Harlow with his first great-grandson arriving in July, 2026. Jim is also survived by his siblings: Diane (Raymond) O'Neal, Vickey Keeling, Grant (Gail) Perks Jr., and Rodney (Jeri) Perks; sister-in-law, Onie Perks as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Grant Perks Sr. and Agnes (Rinehart) Perks; brother, Donald Perks and brother-in-law, Steve Keeling.
Jim earned his Bachelor's Degree before embarking on a meaningful career that blended education and entrepreneurship. He devoted himself to teaching as a 4th grade math and science teacher at Risen Christ Lutheran School, where he was known for his hard work and passion for supporting his students. After his teaching career, he retired from Cooper Energy Services. Following this, he and his wife purchased Carmichael Appliances, demonstrating his dedication and industrious spirit in every venture he undertook.
Beyond his professional achievements, James was a pillar of his church community. He was a founding member of Risen Christ Lutheran Church and served in numerous roles throughout his life there. Among his proudest accomplishments was his involvement in the church’s praise team and his tenure as choir director, roles through which he inspired many with his commitment and musical talent.
A man devoted to family, James treasured the time spent supporting his children and grandchildren, particularly at school activities and sporting events. Shared memories include several joyful winters spent with his wife in Florida and Myrtle Beach, reflecting a life enriched by love and togetherness.
In addition to his professional and familial commitments, James was an active member of community organizations such as the Jaycees and Kiwanis, contributing his time and talents to bettering the lives of those around him.
Friends, family, and community members are invited to pay their respects at a visitation held on May 11, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Risen Christ Lutheran Church, located at 41 E Possum Rd, Springfield, Ohio, 45502. The funeral service will follow on May 12, 2026, beginning at 12:00 p.m. at the same location. Jim will be laid to rest at Ferncliff Cemetery.
James D. Perks leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service, unwavering faith, and a family that treasures his memory deeply. His impact as a teacher, community leader, and family man will be remembered with great respect and affection.
