Jerry E. Baker, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2025, in his hometown of Springfield, Ohio, at the age of 89. Born on June 23, 1936, Jerry lived a full life marked by warmth, passion, and a dedication to his family.
Jerry was a talented carpenter by trade, who found great fulfillment in his career, retiring after over 42 years with IH/Navistar. He had a unique ability to connect with people, and he never met a stranger. His characteristic greeting—"Where did you go to school?"—reflected his genuine interest in others. He would proudly follow up with, "I went to Northeastern, I am a 'Jet'—a testament to the pride he had in his roots.
An avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Jerry cherished the camaraderie of sports and liked sharing these experiences with family and friends. His deep appreciation for the outdoors found him fishing and duck hunting as often as possible. As many of his loved ones can attest, "Bake" or "Ol Duck" skillfully modified fishing boats and built duck blinds that became cherished spaces for storytelling and adventure with his son, family and friends.
Jerry's family was the cornerstone of his existence. He is survived by his devoted wife of 26 years, Oleda (Short) Baker, who provided him with unfailing support and companionship. He was a proud father to Lisa Blevins, Deborah (Scott) Ground, Brett (Kim) Baker, and Brenda (Jamie) Baird, embracing each moment spent with them. Additionally, the love extended to his step-children, Debra (Jeff) Johnson, Deana (Steve) Knisley, and Doug (Heidi) Short. As a grandfather, Jerry found immense pride in his grandchildren: Kyle (Hannah) Blevins, Beth Blevins, Tyler (Hanna) Houston, Jack and Luke Houston, Jacob Baker, Lindsay Ground, Nicholson and Emerson Baird, and Brandon (Megan) Short and Logan (Hannah) Short. His heart swelled with pride at the accomplishments and qualities of each grandchild, and they were a testament to the love he poured into his family. He was also blessed with several great-grandchildren, who brought even more light into his life.
Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Charles E. and Mary (Chenaultz) Baker, and his first wife of 36 years, Sherrie A. Baker (Rivenburgh), mother of his children. He also mourned the loss of his infant children, Sharlynn and Eric Baker, and his step-son, Dan Short.
