Lt Col John Brian Schauss (Ret) USAF, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2025, at the age of 79, in London, Ohio, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 26, 1946, in East Cleveland, Ohio. John grew up in Cleveland Heights and graduated from Miami University in 1968 where he was active in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC).
John was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. He honorably served his country with two tours of duty in Vietnam over a five-year period of active-duty service. John eventually earned the rank of Lt Col and served 17 years in the Ohio Air National Guard, 160th Air Refueling Wing. In total, he served 22 years. After his active-duty service, John pursued his passion for aviation and ultimately built a rewarding career as a pilot for United Airlines.
John’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was a loving husband to Rebecca “Becky” (Mattinson) Schauss, with whom he shared 57 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they enjoyed traveling the world, with a love for Hawaii and the South Pacific. They also enjoyed bi-annual beach trips with the whole family. Their travels created lasting memories, new friendships and family fun. When not traveling, John preferred to spend his time grilling on the patio or constructing an optimal fire indoors during colder weather. He was known for his disarming wit, strength under pressure, notable decisiveness, and endless stories.
He is survived by his daughter, Wendy (William "Bill") Garvin; his son, Brian (Melissa) Schauss; and his sister, Gretchen Schauss. John’s legacy will live on through his cherished grandchildren, Ben Garvin, Zach Garvin, Katherine Schauss, and William Schauss, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He will also be remembered fondly by his sister-in-law, Jane Schauss.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Henry E. Schauss and Ruth (Sarstedt) Schauss, and his brother, Roger Schauss, in eternal rest.
The family invites all who knew and loved John to gather in his memory on December 21, 2025. A visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM, followed by a funeral service beginning at 3:30 p.m. Both services will take place at Ingling & Lewis Funeral Home, located at 24 N Chillicothe St, South Charleston, OH 45368.
John Brian Schauss will be greatly missed, yet his spirit and the love he shared with his family and friends will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
