John Lawrence Stewart

John Lawrence Stewart, lovingly known as Johnny, passed away on September 26, 2026, in Dayton, Ohio, due to failing health. A lifelong Cedarvillian, Johnny was born on July 4, 1962, in Xenia, Ohio, and will be remembered as a man whose deepest sense of purpose was found in the people he loved and a dedicated life built around his family, hard work, and lifelong passions.

Johnny worked for many years at Airborne Express prior to its closing. He also had a deep love for preserving history and was passionate about restoring covered bridges. He was a talented athlete who played many sports, including football, basketball, baseball, and boxing. He was a unique personality with a robust sense of humor and a rich appreciation for music and film. He was always the first to crack a joke to make others laugh and to share his favorite songs. Never a conformist, Johnny was always confident walking to the beat of his own drum.

He was an avid Cincinnati Bengals fan and Cincinnati Reds fan, and few things made him happier than sharing that excitement with those around him. His proudest accomplishment was his family. He loved spending time with his grandsons and took special delight in buying Bengals apparel for everyone, turning his team spirit into another way of showing affection.

One of the defining moments of Johnny’s life began when he met the love of his life, Joy, after they locked eyes when she was 16. That connection grew into a lasting marriage of nearly 36 years, a bond marked by devotion and a shared life with their two children. He was everything his children could have ever wanted in a father: strong, reliable, and loving.

In addition to his beloved wife, Joy Lanette (Hammond) Stewart, John is survived by his son, Jordy Lawrence (Kristen Barker) Stewart; his daughter, Jonna Lynn (Nathan) Raffel; his grandsons, Holden John Raffel and Estlin Jennings Raffel; his brothers, Steve Stewart and Kelly Stewart; his half-sister, Jessica (Henry) Appel; his half-brothers, Randy Stewart and Huey Stewart; cousins, nieces, and nephews; as well as many lifelong friends. He will be deeply missed by each of them, and his one-of-a-kind personality will not fade from their memories.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances (DeHaven) Stewart, and his father, Dale Stewart. He was also preceded in death by his mamaw and papaw, Veryl and Howard DeHaven, with whom he shared a special bond.

Visitation will be held on October 2, 2026, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Cedarville United Presbyterian Church, 30 W. Chillicothe St., Cedarville, Ohio 45314. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church, with Pastor Anne Horton officiating. John will be laid to rest at North Cemetery.

Johnny had a deep and abiding faith in the Lord. It was a belief he carried throughout his life and one that remained with him through its joys and hardships. His family finds comfort in knowing that the faith he held in this life has now brought him home.

Johnny will be remembered for his passion for athletics—Who Dey!—his loyalty to family and friends, his love and preservation of history, and the warmth he brought to those closest to him. His life was one of authenticity, fellowship, and joy, and he leaves behind a legacy that will be treasured always.
