"Julian “Dale” Maxey, 84 of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his son’s home in Yellow Springs, Ohio surrounded by family on 08/17/2024.

Dale was born in Ironton, Ohio to Julian and Evangeline Maxey. The family moved to Columbus, Ohio when Dale was 2 years old, and he grew up loving the family Airedales and going on weekend trips to visit family back in Ironton, Ohio. Dale pursued and completed multiple academic degrees including a PhD in cultural anthropology from the Ohio State University. He was an educator in multiple settings ranging from grade schools to prisons to colleges where he ultimately taught sociocultural anthropology, education, and an interdisciplinary rainforest studies course at Ohio University Chillicothe. Dale was actively engaged during the civil rights movement and remained very passionate about civil rights the rest of his life. Many of those who knew Dale will remember him as a gentle and friendly family oriented man who always saw the best in people and enjoyed reading, drawing, traveling, and taking care of animals.

Dale was preceded in death by his father, Julian Maxey, and mother, Evangeline Maxey. Dale is survived and will be deeply missed by his wife, Andrea, his son, Adrian, and his daughter-in-law, Sierra. He is also survived and deeply missed by Dick, Nancy, Jenifer, Ayden, and Kylie.

Dale will be cremated, and the family has requested that everyone who knew Dale to please share memories of him in the guestbook comments below.
