Springfield

Lori D. Rutherford, age 58, of Springfield, passed away on April 9, 2026, in her hometown of Springfield, Ohio, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born on November 26, 1967, Lori’s life was a testament to kindness, strength, and devotion to those she loved.

Lori was known far and wide for her sweet and nurturing spirit, balanced with a sternness when necessary—a combination that made her an amazing grandmother and a source of laughter and comfort to many. Though she had several grandchildren, she was affectionately called simply "mom" by everyone, never quite getting the grandma title but embodying all the warmth and care that name implies. Her gentle spirit shone through in everything she did, and those who knew her treasured her presence deeply.

Most of her working days were spent at Speedway, especially the station on North Street, where she welcomed countless customers with a smile that brightened their days and built lasting friendships. Many who frequented the station remember Lori's warmth and kindness, appreciating the genuine nature behind her welcoming smile.

Lori’s passions included cooking and grilling, and she always cherished family get-togethers, looking forward to these moments of joy and connection. She had a fondness for scratch-off lottery tickets and loved listening to soul and R&B music, which brought her much happiness. A natural caregiver, Lori was always ready to give the shirt off her back, prioritizing others before herself and tending to those in need with incredible compassion.

She is survived by her father and step-mother, James Powers, Sr. and Jackie Powers; her children, Gary Powers, Chandra (Dountray) Dickerson, and Chaniece Wilson (Michael Groves); and a beloved circle of grandchildren—Taveon (Lindsey) Staten, Ishmel Johnson, Cairo Dickerson, Izell Marshall, Dai'lon Dickerson, Dountray Dickerson II, and Essynce Dickerson—as well as her great-grandchildren, Ivy Staten and Santiago Staten; and her devoted partner, Benjamin Mackland. Lori will also be dearly missed by her sisters, Rachel Rowe and Ronita Powers; close nephews and niece, Malik Rowe, Darius Powers, and Jade Powers; and her special friends Beth Cherry, Andrea Martin, and Carolyn Miller, each of whom held a cherished place in her heart.

Lori also leaves behind a legacy of love remembered by her late mother, Sarah Smith and her late brother, James Powers, Jr., whose memories continue to live on in her family’s hearts.
