1955 Coach 2024

Mark A. Stoll

January 6, 1955 — March 12, 2024

Springfield, Ohio

Mark A. Stoll, lovingly known as “Coach”, age 69, of Springfield, passed away on March 12, 2024 in his home surrounded by his family. Mark was born on January 6, 1955 in Springfield, Ohio, the son of the late Lorn and Patricia (McCall) Stoll.

Mark was an educator at Hayward Middle school and North High School from 1982-1995.  Beginning in 1995 until 2016, he served as the athletic director at North High School, Springfield High School, and Xenia High School. His first year of retirement didn’t last long, as he began to work as Assistant Principal at Northridge Middle School where his grandchildren went to school.  He officially retired in June of 2023.

His coaching career spanned many decades, starting at Urbana University as the Head Girls Basketball Coach in 1980.  He spent 26 years coaching Varsity Baseball for North High School and 12 years as the assistant basketball coach there as well.  In addition to spending countless hours coaching, Mark facilitated baseball clinics for youth in the community for over 20 years with various organizations.  After a couple of years of being “retired” from coaching, his passion for coaching got the best of him and the love of the game led him to coach his grandson’s summer baseball teams.

While coaching, “Coach” received many awards and accolades for his commitment to the youth of Clark County. He was selected many times as “Coach of the Year” for Clark County, News-Sun, Miami Valley, Mizuno, WOL, and GWOC.

Coach spent his whole life active in the community. Additionally, he was an avid softball player for over 20 years, being selected as a USSSA All American.  During this time, he formed more relationships with people than any of us will ever know.

Coach put family first, always. He made sure to include everyone (brother, sister, nieces and nephews) in his many endeavors. He was fortunate to coach with his brother Doug during his baseball career and work with his sister Roxann at Northridge the last years of his career.

Mark was married to his beloved wife Debbie, celebrating their 46th wedding anniversary on Monday, March 11th. He adored his daughter, Heather, son-in-law “Saint '' Benny, and his 4 grandchildren - Jordon, Aiden, Landon, and Chloe-spoiling them all and creating endless memories with them. In addition, Mark is survived by his brother, Doug (Molly) Stoll; sisters, Roxann (Kyle) McClain and Lori (Mark) McDonough; sisters-in-law, Pat (Bill) Roberts and Sherry (Jerry) Wiford; brother-in-law, Chuck (Missy) Fultz; nephews and nieces, Josh, Matt, Luke, Grace, Wendy, Andy, Tyler, Connor, Cleo, Hayley and Megan; “bonus sons”, Billy Fultz and Walt Sanford; and close friends, Barry Rowland, Brian Brown and Randy Goforth. Mark also raised two young men whom he played an important part in their lives, Darnell and Brandon “BY” Young. Sadly, Brandon preceded him in death in 2014.

Mark shared with his wife that the greatest compliment he has ever received was his ballplayers coming for a visit and still calling him “Coach”. His family would like to thank Barry Rowland, Billy Fultz, Walt Sanford, and Josh Workman for helping to keep Coach home during this incredibly hard journey. But most importantly, just thanking their oldest grandson Jordon does not do him justice because he moved in with them when Mark came home from the hospital to help in any way he could. In the middle of the night, it was Jordon doing for his Papaw what most 21-year-olds would never think of doing. Thank you! Thank You!!

Coach’s legacy will live on through all of those he touched and inspired.

In lieu of flowers, the family has set up an account @PNC bank, Mark Stoll Memorial Fund, to continue his legacy of giving.
