In Loving Memory of Mary (Takiisha) Harrison
Mary “Takiisha” Harrison, a woman of boundless energy, deep compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice and unity, passed away on May 4th, 2026 at the age of 71. Even in her final days, she moved through life with grace and determination, continuing to uplift those around her.
Born on May 19, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, to Thomas and Sumancie Harrison, Mary carried a lifelong passion for learning. She studied at Purdue and Northwestern University and earned her Master’s degree from Pepperdine University. She devoted many years of her professional life to caring for others as a Respiratory Therapist.
In retirement, her love for children and education called her back to service. She spent a year teaching at Nightingale Montessori School in Springfield, Ohio, where her curiosity, warmth, and joyful spirit left a lasting impression on both students and colleagues.
Mary was an athlete and adventurer at heart, finding joy in swimming, pickleball, and dreams of travel. Yet wherever she went, it was people—not places—that drew her. She nurtured relationships across distances, ensuring that family and friends always felt seen, valued, and loved.
A Life of Service and Empowerment
A devoted member of the Bahá’í Faith, Mary dedicated her life to principles of unity, justice, and the oneness of humanity. She was especially passionate about uplifting young people and people of African descent. The Bahá’í teachings that describe people of African descent as ‘the pupil of the eye,’ essential to the vision and progress of humanity resonated with her long held beliefs.
In Springfield, she worked closely with several Haitian families and youth, offering encouragement, mentorship, and practical support. She had a gift for seeing potential in others—often before they could see it in themselves —and urging them forward with both love and conviction.
One young woman she mentored shared:
“You used to tell me, ‘If they don’t open the door, go through the window.’ That is what I am doing…”
Through her words, her example, and her tireless advocacy for justice, Mary helped others walk with confidence, dignity, and purpose.
Family
Mary was the heartbeat of the Harrison family, reaching out and visiting relatives to ensure that no distance could ever weaken their familial ties. Her love was both purposeful and energetic, she made it her mission to ensure everyone felt her comforting presence.
Mary is survived by her lifelong companion, Lloyd Goodall; her son, Satchel McMahon (born August 1993); and her two stepsons, Paul and Phil McMahon.
She is also survived by her siblings: Kenny House (Donna), Tommy Harrison, John Harrison, Brenda Taylor (Herb), Timothy Harrison (Regina), Roshell Harrison, Thomas Harrison Jr. (Sherry), and Ashanti Featherwind. She leaves behind a large, loving extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever carry her lessons of love and compassion.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Coniah Norwood, James “Junior” House, and Gregory Harrison.
Spiritual Journey
Mary’s life was rooted in a deep and abiding faith. She loved humanity expansively and carried a special longing to connect with people across cultures. Her radiant spirit, bright eyes, and quick wit brought joy and strength to all who knew her.
Though her physical presence is no longer with us, her influence continues—in the lives she uplifted, the courage she awakened, and the love she so freely gave.
Her soul has now taken flight, embarking on the grand, global journey she always envisioned onward, free and radiant.
