Sue C. Sassen, born February 15, 1933 in Dayton, Ohio to Ervin and Rachel(Harris) Buffenbarger. A lifelong Clifton/Cedarville resident.
She attended school in Clifton, and she graduated from Cedarville High School in 1952. She was married to Henry H. Sassen for 36 years until his death in December of 1988. She is survived by her children, John (Marsha) of Clifton, Roger (Masae) of Japan, and LuCinda (Tim) of Cedarville.
She was preceded in death by daughter Beverly on March 6th of this year. She has three grandchildren: Anne of Cedarville, Austin(Lily) of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, and Logan of Cedarville. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Sue was a self-employed upholsterer who also worked in her husband’s appliance and repair store in Cedarville. She was active in the PTA, and she was a member of the Greene Valley Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) for over 25 years. She held many offices in the organization which worked to raise scholarship money to help young women go to college. For many years, she worked for the Greene Co. Board of Elections as a poll worker.
She planned many Cedarville Class of 1952 class reunions with her classmates. They would go on many trips together as a group over the years, and they always had a great time.
Sue welcomed everyone into her home. It didn’t matter the color of their skin, their life circumstances, or their religion. They would be warmly welcomed. She would always be the first to give a helping hand to anyone in need.
Sue was a mother to a disabled daughter, and she made sure that she was treated, and given opportunities to participate in the world, like everyone else in a time when people with disabilities were often not seen. We like to think of her as a trailblazer for people like her daughter being more accepted into a world that was not, at times, kind.
She was one of a kind, she was loved deeply, and she will be greatly missed.
