Sylvia Grinvalds, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on December 6, 1932, in Latvia, Sylvia lived a life deeply marked by resilience, grace, and an unwavering spirit.
At a very young age, Sylvia demonstrated incredible strength as she navigated the challenges of war and displacement during World War II. She and her family left Latvia in pursuit of safety, enduring the trials of Soviet occupation and ultimately finding refuge in Germany, before starting anew in the United States in 1950. This journey shaped her profound appreciation for life and instilled in her a tenacity that would carry her through all her endeavors.
Sylvia’s academic journey began at Graham High School as part of the Class of 1951, followed by a bachelor’s degree from Wittenberg University. Her education held great significance to her, reflecting her belief in lifelong learning and personal growth.
Sylvia’s professional journey was notably impactful, dedicating over 30 years of service in the health industry, beginning at Mercy Hospital before taking on the role of Supervisor at the Blood Bank at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Her commitment to her work was evident in the care she provided to countless individuals and families throughout her career.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Sylvia was a vibrant soul whose passions included horseback riding, cooking, and the joy of hosting lavish Latvian parties filled with delicious food and laughter. She was also an avid golfer and a passionate reader of non-fiction, always seeking to expand her horizons. Her love for travel, especially with her late husband Theodore, sparked countless adventures that were often filled with wine tastings and cherished moments at vineyards, bringing them closer together as they explored the beauty of the world.
A true matriarch, Sylvia took immense pride in her family, reveling in the joy of each gathering and the warmth of her loved ones. She is survived by her son, Ed Grinvalds, and her daughter, Sandy (Randy) Jones. Her legacy lives on in her grandchildren—Natalie Grinvalds, Jenna Grinvalds (D.J. Herier), Olivia Jones, Emilie (Seth) Coppler, and Joshua Jones—as well as her great-granddaughter, Vera Coppler. Each cherished her boundless love, nurturing spirit, and the lessons she imparted about hope and anticipation.
Sylvia was predeceased in 2006 by her loving husband of 52 years Theodore, and her daughter Linda Ingrid Grinvalds. She also rejoins her parents, Karlis and Matilde Dzelzkalejs, and sister Vera Dzelzkalejs.
As we remember Sylvia, we honor her belief in dreaming and planning, finding joy in every moment of anticipation. She taught us not only to embrace our journeys but also to savor the experiences along the way. A visitation to celebrate her life will be held on July 24, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Jackson Lytle and Lewis Life Celebration Center followed by a graveside service at Ferncliff Cemetery.
