Thomas Lee Chaney, beloved family man, devoted Marine, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2026, in his lifelong home of Springfield, Ohio. Born on September 24, 1949, Tom was a true warrior, not only in military service but also in the countless battles he faced throughout life, always emerging with a heart of gold, even amidst the sometimes stubborn spirit that was inherently him.
Tom will be fondly remembered for his steadfast dedication to those he loved. He was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served as a heavy equipment operator. His bravery earned him three Purple Hearts, a testament to his resilience and courage under fire. “Once a Marine, always a Marine,” he carried this motto into every aspect of his life. This fierce loyalty extended beyond the battlefield; it resonated deeply in his commitment to his family and friends.
In his professional endeavors, Tom worked at Navistar, dedicating several years before retiring. For many years, he was the diligent caretaker at the Clark County Fairgrounds. It is at "Tom's Gate," where he sat welcoming visitors, that many hold fond memories of their encounters with him.
An enthusiast of life, Tom had a passion for hot rods, especially his prized 55 Chevy’s, spending joyful hours at car shows, sharing his love for automobiles with anyone fortunate enough to join him. A firearms enthusiast, he took pride in each skill he developed, embracing hobbies that matched his adventurous spirit.
Tom leaves behind his loving wife, Diane Chaney, and his two devoted sons, Ricky L. Chaney (Elizabeth) and Michael A. Chaney (Rikki Ann). He was the proud grandfather to Britney, Brandon, Michael Jr., Zoey, Madison, Abby, Ally, and Emma, and a great-grandfather to Taylor, Bo, Jules, Hazel, and Fantasia. Each family milestone was a cause for celebration in his eyes, and he would drop everything to offer a helping hand to those he loved most. He will also be remembered by his dear friends, Glenn Beagle and Woody Berien.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Mary (Smith) Chaney and brothers, Tim and Terry Chaney.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2026 from 5-7p.m. at Jackson Lytle & Lewis Life Celebration Center.
