Thomas L. Rutschilling, of South Charleston, passed away on December 10, 2025, in London, Ohio at the age of 84. Born on June 9, 1941, in Cranberry Prairie, Ohio, Tom led a life dedicated to family, community, and service. He leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Tom exhibited a steadfast commitment to his community and his passions. His unwavering support for local sports was evident through his 26 years as a member and two-time president of the Quarterback Club. He took on the crucial task of maintaining the Southeastern football and soccer fields for 17 years, ensuring the fields were always in remarkable condition for aspiring athletes. Tom's dedication to education and youth was equally remarkable; as chairman of the Scholarship Fund Drive for Southeastern High School, he played a pivotal role in securing a significant $410,650.00 in scholarships for deserving seniors, an achievement reflective of his belief in the power of education. He was proud to acknowledge that $233,166.00 of those scholarships came from local donations. He volunteered his time serving on Southeastern School levy committees and was the treasurer of the school levy committee.
Tom was also a longtime member and three-time president of the Community Club, contributing selflessly for 45 years. His leadership extended to the Petunia Festival, where he served on several committees and as co-chairman for three decades, nurturing an event that brought joy and unity to South Charleston. He was also a member of South Charleston Opera House Players and the treasurer of People Helping People. His impact on local governance was notable as well; he served on the South Charleston Village Commission and held the office of president and mayor of the commission.
A deeply spiritual man, Tom was a devoted member of St. Charles Borromeo Church, where he not only served on the Church Council and as its president but also contributed to the building committee for the church hall, taught CCD religion classes and served on the St. Charles Cemetery Committee. His love for his church and community was evident in his countless contributions, reinforcing his belief in service above self.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia (Magoto) Rutschilling, with whom he shared a loving bond since their marriage on February 3, 1968. Together, they welcomed Michael, Janelle Heskett, Matthew (Elisha), and Thomas J. (Megan) into the world, fostering a home filled with warmth and encouragement. His grandchildren—Jason Rutschilling, Mikaela Rutschilling, Ethan Heskett, Lauren (Wade) Smiddy, Jude Rutschilling, Liberty Rutschilling, and Landon Rutschilling—were a source of immense pride and joy for him, as he attended every game and many practices with unwavering support just as he did for his children.
Tom is also survived by his siblings Fred (Marlene) Rutschilling, John (Beth) Rutschilling, and Ann (Bill) McCollum; brother-in-law, Bill George, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will carry forward his spirit. He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Mathilda (Droesch) Rutschilling and his sister Marilyn George.
Beyond his community involvement, Tom cherished the simple joys in life. He loved playing euchre and had a gift for conversation, never having met a stranger. Every Saturday, he looked forward to breakfast with his special group of friends, gatherings that spoke volumes of the relationships he valued.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the compassionate nurses and staff at Bluebird Assisted Living in London, Ohio, for the exceptional care they provided Tom during the last year of his life.
